Kinesio Taping Q & A

Dr. Elizabeth Greenberg, DC

What is Kinesio Taping?

Kinesio Taping is a technique to enhance your body’s healing process through continuous support for your muscles and joints. The tape is designed to provide support without limiting your range of motion.

The tape can take three shapes: X, Y, and I. Depending on the affected area and the extent of the inflammation, Dr. Greenberg will recommend the shape that has yielded the best results.

Intended to target receptors in the somatosensory system, which is responsible for detecting touch, temperature, position in space and limb position, among other information, Kinesio Tape lifts the skin infinitesimally to allow lymphatic drainage, effectively reducing inflammation.

The tape itself is latex-free, with minimal risks of allergic reactions, like rashes or redness, and can stay on for days at a time without needing replacement.

As a certified Kinesio Taping practitioner, Dr. Greenberg uses Kinesio Tape to treat issues relating to:

  • Orthopedics
  • Neuromuscular conditions
  • Neurology

How does Kinesio Tape work?

Before placing the Kinesio Tape on your body, Dr. Greenberg performs a series of diagnostic tests to make sure she’s identified the exact source of pain or discomfort.

Once you and Dr. Greenberg have located your source of pain, she applies the Kinesio Tape over the muscles in the affected area in a stretched out position. The intensity of the stretch depends on the severity of your condition.

The tape pulls the surface layers of skin to allow more space between the dermis and the muscle, enabling both effectual draining in the lymph channels and healthy blood flow. The healthier these factors are, the more productive your nervous system’s communication with your brain will be.

If you’ve suffered an injury, your muscles are typically compressed. This means that the nerve receptors send out pain, heat, pressure, cold, and other information to the brain. Kinesio Tape makes sure the brain gets the greatest amount of sensory input available.

There are six kinds of Kinesio corrections:

  • Mechanic: Improves stability
  • Fascia: Improves your fibrous tissues’ movement
  • Space: Decreases pressure
  • Tendon/ligament: Reduces stress on a ligament
  • Functional: Assists or limits a motion
  • Circulatory: Moves lymphatic fluid to less congested areas

Who should not use Kinesio Tape?

Dr. Greenberg doesn't recommend Kinesio Tape if you have:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Infections
  • Cancer
